GM currently has a couple of compact crossovers out there with the Chevy Trax and the more expensive, and more premium, Buick Encore. To be more competitive the 2017 Buick Encore will come as a redesigned model, something we expected since the currently available version was launched as a 2013 model.
While the Trax is built in South Korea and follows the same basic design as the old Mokka, the Encore is basically the same car as the Mokka which is produced in the same factories as the Opel version of the car. The previous version lacked some features and had pretty much the same problems as the Trax, so it is going to receive a big update that will be introduced with 2017 Buick Encore. According to reports and based on images we were able to see it is going to be built on the latest Mokka X concept car.
2017 Buick Encore Release Date
Just like with the European model, the Buick version of the car will receive an all-new interior, a few updates on the exterior as well as an improved powertrain. All of these should not only make for a more desirable car but also for a better purchase, especially since the Encore is slightly more expensive than its main rivals. The car will most likely be launched in early 2017 at the Detroit Auto Show that should be the perfect timing for it to arrive.
Let’s start our preview of the 2017 Buick Encore with the engine. Currently, available 1.4-liter turbocharged inline four on the base model is likely going to be replaced by the same but more powerful, thankfully to a higher state of tune, 1.4-liter turbocharged unit that can be found on the Sports Touring model. This means that the base version will feature a rather impressive 152 horsepower and over 150 lb-ft of torque unit which is expected not only to be faster than the older version but also more efficient.
Also, this time around it seems that a second engine will be installed on the higher end trim levels. This has been rumored to be the highly acclaimed 1.5-liter turbocharged mill which can also be seen in the Malibu. In the Encore, however, the engine is expected to make over 160 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque which would easily make it a favorite in its class. Just like before, four-wheel drive will be offered as an option while the only transmission of choice will be a six-speed automatic.
The outside of the car will also closely follow the path paved by the Mokka. The only difference here will be the fact that the Encore will use vertical slats in its grille while the Mokka doesn’t. Among other things, we will be getting the new, slightly more aggressive looking headlights with the new daylight running lights which will now be mounted on the upper part of the headlights. The front bumper will also be new, and it will include a slightly larger shield as well as new fog lamps enclosures. The back of the car, on the other hand, will be nearly identical to the ongoing model and the only difference will be represented by the new LED clusters in its tail lights.
One of the segments that could receive most changes in the 2017 Buick Encore is the interior of the car; we expect it to be a lot better than before especially at this price point. While the current car still features a great interior in terms of materials, it does look a bit cluttered, and the finishing touches are not as great as they should be. The new model will get an entirely new dashboard and instrument cluster which will likely be identical to those on the Opel counterpart. This means that the car’s center stack will become less cluttered and easier to use while the infotainment system will be updated to their latest unit that will support both Google’s Android Auto and Apple’s CarPlay. Other changes will include more comfortable seats as well as softer and nicer to the touch materials on the dashboard and door covers.
Just like almost any redesign we expect the prices to be changed but it is obvious that Buick does not have a lot of room for increasing. Reports suggest that new Encore should arrive at the market for a price no higher than $25,000 which will be right where the current model is. Top trim models could be offered for about $30,000, mostly depending on the amount of optional features that are chosen by buyers.
